US & Mexico Healthcare Systems
Explore the healthcare systems of the US & Mexico in this Honors College Course in Mexico City this summer!
Co-taught by University of Massachusetts Boston Professor Dr. Eduardo Siqueira and National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) faculty from the School of Medicine, the course “U.S and Mexico Health Care Systems” is an exploration of healthcare systems in the United States and Mexico. The nature and function of the healthcare systems in the U.S. and Mexico are described and analyzed. During the first week, the course examines major U.S. health care/insurance programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, Medicare for All, the Public Option, and private health insurance in the U.S. In the second week, UNAM faculty will discuss the Seguro Popular, the Instituto de Salud para el Bienestar (INSABI), the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), and private health insurance in Mexico. The course will also cover the social, political, economic, ethical, professional, and technological forces that impact the U.S. and Mexico health care systems.

HONORS 293: Honors Topic Social & Behavioral Sciences
3-credits, open to all students, satisfies a Social Behavioral General Education requirement.

- Thursday, August 22:Visit to IMSS's Facilty, Guest Lecture, observation of clinic work and preventative medicine, Visit to Friday Kahlo Museum, Tour of Coyacan District
- Friday, August 23: Visit a private hospital, observation of the visit pass and routine hospitalization activities. Observation of work in medical appointments, visit and tour of UNAM's Medicine Palace.
