Description

The goal of this course is to move towards creative justice, and center systems change for social justice, while calling for intentional intrapersonal and interpersonal healing via the study and application of intersectional justice. Through these frameworks students will collectively examine the history of slavery, genocide, and systemic oppression that has led to the valuation of patriarchal white supremacy as the building blocks of the United States, and in relationship to colonization globally. Also to be explored are the ways in which the arts and culture sector reproduces institutional and systemic oppression through upholding and centering these structures, often unconsciously, and through participation in the political economy of the arts, centering economic production over culture. Note: This special topic course will utilize frameworks developed by the organization Arts Connect International (ACI) as related to its course on intersectional racial equity, the Cultural Equity Learning Community (CELC). This is the first time the CELC course has been adapted to university course application.
